"Lust for power plunged Europe into a dreadful war in 1914. The public might ask if the same thing is the cause of plunging Victoria into blackness and sorrow."
Mansfield Courier

An asinine policy?
Correspondence, to the Editor: 'Bush Fires'
27 January 1939

Sir, Prior to 1922 the much maligned mountain cattle men had practical (though not legal) control of the bush and by sensible methods kept the forests safe for themselves, the public and posterity.

About that time the Forests Commission proceeded to enforce an asinine policy which has resulted in the drastic fires and loss of life in 1926, 1932 and the recent appalling disasters. If matters are allowed to go on as at present, every town and district in Victoria is in danger.

Lust for power plunged Europe into a dreadful war in 1914. The public might ask if the same thing is the cause of plunging Victoria into blackness and sorrow three times in thirteen years. Will our Shire President endeavour to organise a monster meeting of all Shires in the North-East and any others who wish to come in, and perhaps have his name go down in history as one of the men to take the lead in saving Victoria from destruction?

I take my hat off to the people of Alexandra on their attitude in the matter.

Yours etc.

Frank Lovick
